KCC Gives Tips On Kupuna Care

The Kupuna Education Center at Kapiolani Community College currently offers classes for those interested in caregiving and elder care/active aging.

The series of courses begins with Series I: Family Caregiving Skills: Personal Care and Transfer Techniques. Offered twice, the first section is held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25 to March 11 in Kopiko 242; the second section is set from 9 to 11 a.m. April 17 to May 1 in Kopiko 242. Cost is $15.

Series II: The Basics of Family Caregiving runs from 6 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday through March 3 in Kopiko 128. Tuition costs $30.


Beginning March 31, Series IV: Dealing With Your Parents’ Stuff will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday through April 21 in Kopiko 128. Tuition costs $50.

Caring for elders at home is a career option as well, and the Kupuna Education Center provides Home Care Worker Training, Levels I, II and III. An orientation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 23 in Kopiko 240.An interview and application process is required prior to entry.

KCC also has a TV series dedicated to Hawaii’s seniors and their families. Titled Kupuna Connections, the show airs at 7 a.m. each Saturday on cable channel 55, featuring a variety of topics for kupuna, including adult day care, residential options for seniors, keeping brains healthy and more.
