KCC Market Mulling A Sunday Expansion

Del.icio.usThe Saturday morning farmer’s market in Kapiolani Community College’s parking lot has grown from a small affair to a packed, bustling bazaar - enough to fuel talks on opening a Sunday market as well.
“The Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation has made a proposal to KCC to possibly do a test seasonal farmers market on Sundays,” confirmed Carol Hoshiko, the college’s dean of community relations. “What we’ve done over the past month is share ideas with the three neighborhood boards that represent communities in areas near KCC.”
With hope of starting a Sunday market in the next couple of months, representatives of the college’s Culinary Institute of the Pacific and from HFBF are seeking feedback but no date has been set for the test market, nor have decisions such as number of vendors been addressed.
Concerns have been voiced about the additional day of crowds and traffic congestion - especially now that the market has become a tourist hot spot. The talks are aimed at weighing the benefits of the possible test market against these concerns.
“We do support the concept of supporting our local agricultural industry as well as using fresh products,” said Hoshiko, who has served as KCC’s dean of Culinary Arts and Hospitality for several years. “We have a culinary program, so we promote healthy eating and using fresh products - it’s an educational benefit.”
The college also envisions a larger presence at the market in order to make the public aware of campus culinary programs.
