Recycle Drive Oct. 16 In Kaimuki

Del.icio.usAloha Aina Earth Day comes to Kaimuki High School for the seventh year Oct. 16, thanks to a partnership of businesses and citizens who want to clean up and recycle useful items for the community.
Residents can bring all kinds of metal, paper, appliances and old bulky things to the school parking lot from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For those needing curbside pickup, call state Rep. Scott Nishimoto at 586-8515 or Rene Mansho at 306-1876.
The recycling drive is spearheaded and coordinated by Mansho of Schnitzer Steel, a Campbell Industrial Park metal recycler that, with other industrial and government partners, will give its cash proceeds from the drive to Kaimuki High School and the Kapahulu and Moiliili community centers.
Items sought are metal scrap and appliances, auto parts, bicycles, metal appliances, lawnmowers, newspaper, cardboard, HI-5 beverage containers, green waste, cooking oil, used eyeglasses, all kinds of batteries, cell phones, printer cartridges, phone books, e-waste, plastic bags, hangers and bottle caps; and unlimited computers, printers and scanners.
Usable clothing and household items will go to Goodwill Industries, eyeglasses will go to Hawaii Lions clubs, and canned goods will go to Hawaii Foodbank.
Residents may also exchange one incandescent light bulb for two CFLs.
Lawmakers involved are state Reps. Nishimoto and Scott Saiki, House Speaker Calvin Say, former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and City Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi, along with Kaimuki High JROTC Maj. Douglas Thomas and the Kaimuki Lions Club.
