Aiming to teach and promote a healthy lifestyle, Hahaione Elementary School is seeking used or unwanted exercise equipment from the community to help create a dynamic and fully functioning fitness center.
The student council has been raising funds throughout the year and has enough so far for a Kinect video game unit, which allows for full-body, active gaming. The students also are fundraising for pull-up bars and a climbing rock wall.
“The fitness center for the kids would be to use for indoor P.E.,” said council adviser Wendy Shigeta. “Or when it’s raining, the teachers can bring the kids to the fitness center where we’re hoping to set up different stations for indoor physical fitness activities.”
Specifically, the school, which has more than 500 students, could use stability balls, treadmills, small trampolines, fitness bands and balls. But it also welcomes any other functioning equipment that’s safe for children to use, such as a Wii game console, Kinect games, TV sets, a DVD player and fitness DVDs.
“It would be helpful for the kids to engage in a balanced, healthy lifestyle, and this equipment would just be another avenue for that engagement,” Shigeta noted.
