The success of the 2010 Sony Open PGA Tour golf tournament at Waialae spilled over into a $1 million gift to island nonprofits, as distributed through Friends of Hawaii Charities Inc. and matched by the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation with help from individual donors.
Awards were given out May 26 at Bishop Museum to more than 150 local charities that have projects helping women, children and the elderly.
Among the East Oahu recipients is Chaminade’s Service-Learning program.
The next Sony Open is scheduled for Jan. 10-16 2011 at Waialae Country club where Ryan Palmer will defend his championship title.
