Wailupe Campus Will House Senior Classes

Del.icio.usThe city Department of Parks and Recreation recently discussed plans to expand programs for seniors at the vacant Wailupe Valley Elementary School, which closed its doors at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.
The property has since reverted to the city, which owns the land. The park staff has been using the buildings for office space, but proposed classes for senior citizens at the site should start up soon.
“We went out and had a community meeting, and classes for seniors were one thing the community told us they wanted,” city spokesman Bill Brennan said. “There’s funding present in the budget that went into effect July 1 that will allow for the hiring of an instructor for those classes. However long the hiring process takes will determine when the classes actually start up.
“We’ll most likely start with one or two classes - start small, you know - and see how high the demand is and then expand from there,” Brennan added. “I’m not sure what the initial programs would entail, but typically senior programs at our city recreational facilities involve crafts, low-impact aerobics, yoga and the like. That’s what the people can expect.”

The school opened in 1958 with nine teachers and 205 students in grades K-3. When it closed, there were about 75 keiki in grades K-5. Most transferred to Aina Haina.
