The Hawaii Ecotourism Association has honored two Kaimuki businesses for “promoting responsible travel and educational programs.” Andrew and Karen Lockwood‘s Pacific Islands Institute is the 2007 Ecotour Operator of the Year; and Michael Shapiro, editor of Hawaiian Airlines’ Hana Hou magazine, is Travel Writer of the Year for his compelling stories about Hawaii’s flora and fauna - especially the birds. The Honolulu Filipino Jaycees have awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Courtney Kandler of Kaiser High School, one of five deserving Oahu seniors for 2007 ... Kaimuki Christian School eighth-grader Danny Olson took first place among middle schoolers, and Sacred Hearts student Kathleen De Lara was first for upper grades in the Kai Ola Oceans Alive Poetry contest sponsored in part by the Star-Bulletin. They each won a trip for four passengers aboard the Hawaii Superferry. Katya Cessaro of Honolulu Waldorf School took second place to Kathleen ... Aina Haina Elementary School fifth-grader Jenna Bleu Forti is a budding writer. She read her award-winning essay (worth a $150 prize) April 28 in the lobby of the state library as part of the Letters about Literature contest. Jenna wrote to Gail Carson Levine about her Ella Enchanted book, admitting that the book “helped me realize that I am not the only one out there” with problems ...
