Chaminade has appointed internationally respected researcher on allergies and asthma Dr. Helen Turner as its new dean for natural sciences and mathematics. The London-educated immunologist previously worked with Queen’s hospital and the UH medical school ... Alyssa Tsuchiya of Kaiser High and Kevin Donahue of Saint Louis have won college scholarships from the Honolulu chapter of Executive Women International ... East Oahu artist Leah Kilpatrick Rigg is responsible for the three new entrance murals at Windward Mall, where Kamehameha Schools recently completed $23 million in renovations. Her glazed tile pieces depict Kaneohe Bay, the Koolaus, Chinaman’s Hat and the natural landscape. “These murals are going to be part of the community’s history for years to come,” says Leah, who also did the Kaimuki Self-Storage wall. “And it’s wonderful to be a part of something that will make a difference in people’s lives” ... Released in May was the book Faces of Freedom, a collection of stories edited by Rebecca Pepin, a FOX news anchor in Virginia, that profiles 52 American military who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Deyson Cariaga, son of Theresa Inouye of Aina Haina, is Hawaii’s story, written by journalist Curtis Lum of Royal Kunia. Deyson was killed by a homemade bomb in Balad, Iraq, in 2005.
