East Oahu students Thomas Halpenny, Colin O’Brien and Kurt Zwald have received their B.A. degrees from Boston College. And Kurt was cum laude. Their commencement speaker on May 22 was Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who received an honorary degree ... Congratulations to the Hawaii Kai Lions, who earned several awards at the District 50 Lions convention in May on Kauai. Not only did they produce the Best Bulletin (via editor Roy Aoki), member Mervin Wee was elected the new district governor.

Rehab Hospital gave KCC nursing grad Kathleen Torres the AT&T Award of Excellence, a grant that will allow Kathleen, an RN, to pursue her study of spinal cord injuries and rehabilitation nursing ... Kaiser High business teacher Jackie Okumura won an Excellence in Career Education award recently from Heald College on the strength of an essay submitted by her student, Sean Kau. Her colleague, science teacher Tanya Ashimine, won the 2006 Best Buy Teachers Award. It comes with a grant to buy video and other tech stuff for the school ... Kalani High had five winners in the city’s Memorial Day poster contest. Jason Lee was 1st in the high school division, Tara Tamayori 2nd, and Cheryl Chinaka, Jasmine Knight and Reyna Nishimura were honorable mentions. Jason and Tara won round-trip tickets from Aloha Airlines ...
