Hula Grill Waikiki presented its first Ola mau ka Hula Award last week to John Keola Lake. The East Oahu kumu was honored for a lifetime of contributions to preserving traditional Hawaiian hula ... The Hawaii Navy League will give Eleanor Shimogaki its civilian Shipyard Service Award Dec. 5 on Ford Island, not far from where she works as project material manager for Pearl Harbor Shipyard’s submarines. Her motto is “whatever material is required for (Fleet Maintenance), I get.” A recent challenge was to get her hands on a hydraulic valve control mechanism and fly it here ASAP from a sub base on the Mainland. “It’s challenging,” she admits. “It’s not boring, that’s for sure.” As for those traffic complainers, Eleanor’s commute from Hawaii Kai puts her at her desk by 5:30 a.m. every day. The civilian award comes with $1,000 cash, which she can use to obtain some needed materials for herself this time
