The local Trust for Public Land office has hired Kaiser High and UH-Hilo graduate Kawika Burgess for its new position of native lands coordinator. Kawika, who grew up in Hawaii Kai, speaks fluent Hawaiian and will focus on protecting lands that are important to Hawaiian communities and culture. “With Kawika’s help,” says TPL director Lea Hong, “we hope we can conserve more of what makes Hawaii special for future generations” ...

East Oahu’s Donald Hosaka, Walter Soga and Salome Sato are helping classmates plan a special reunion for the University of Hawaii Class of 1958. The Nov. 19 event will honor those who attend as Golden Scholars of an era when gasoline cost 30 cents per gallon, and the blockbuster movie was South Pacific.
