With so many Nutcracker productions on the Island this weekend, you should know that the Hawaii Ballet Theatre version in Leeward Community College Theater boasts of 16 performers from East Oahu alone (456-8100) ... I was very sorry to hear that Cynthia Bond passed away on Dec. 6. Whenever I think of Hanauma Bay, I’m reminded of Cynthia’s love for that beautiful bay and how much she wanted other local folks to share in it ... When Big City Diner celebrated its 10th anniversary last week at the Pacific Beach Hotel, Gov. Linda Lingle was guest speaker, coming to share her five-point economic plan with the crowd in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom ... Now directing the newer Kapolei branch, Stacie was honored for her enthusiasm, positive attitude and that smile ... Josh Royce (Kaimuki 2000) is an honor graduate of the Air National Guard’s six-week basic military training course at Lackland AFB, Texas ... The Celtic Waves play their third annual Solstice concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in HPR’s Atherton Studio on Kaheka Street (955-8821). The band’s lively, foot-stomping talent is all because of guitarist Lawson Cannon and Susan Reinhart on the bodhran - both of Niu Valley; ace fiddler Kevin Craven of Kaimuki, St. Louis Heights musician Clark Ratliffe, who plays flutes and whistles, and Katie McClellen on harp, mandolin and/or vocals (955-8821). Also performing Jan. 3, but much farther away, will be Kalani High School senior Nickolas Ha, who was selected to represent the state in the marching band at the Army All-American Bowl halftime show in the San Antonio Alamodome. The Texas football game will be televised live on NBC, and Nickolas will be blasting away on his trumpet. He’s also in the Falcons Select Wind Ensemble, among other musical accomplishments ... This must be the heaviest entertainment column of the year. Also coming up, actor Elitei Tatafu of Palolo will perform in Manoa Valley Theatre’s spoof, Gutenberg! The Musical! , set for Jan. 14-Feb. 1. It’s directed by Rob Duval of Hawaii Kai (988-6131) ... Accomplished young Kahala harpist Melody Rose Lindsay performs with the Trebles of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, 1730 Punahou St. (941-2566) ... Toro Kumagai (Kalani 2005) has graduated from the Army ROTC leaders course at Fort Lewis, Washingon, which should point him toward his second lieutenant’s commission at Gonzaga University, where he is currently studying ...
