KCC emergency medical services instructor Jeff Zuckernick was in the right place at the right time. He and others assisted a fellow United passenger and cardiac arrest victim last month and revived his heartbeat with CPR and the airport’s defibrillator. Jeff, you see, was on his way to an EMS conference on the Mainland ... On a sadder note, KCC student and Kaimuki resident Zachary Mar, 19, died accidentally on Jan. 18 in Honolulu. The new Narcissus Queen Lisa Wong hails from Kaimuki. She’s a dental assistant to her father Roger - when she’s not attending banquets and being Hawaii’s ambassador of Chinese culture ... Hokulani Elementary School fifth-grader Kevin Costa is one of four poster artists singled out for special honors in Hawaiian Electric Co.‘s Home Energy Challenge campaign. Kevin’s entry pledged: “Planting more plants in my yard to make the house cooler.” For this vow and his drawing, he won a performance by Mad Science at his school. “We wanted to show that everyone, including children, can make a resolution to help protect our environment by using energy wisely,” said HECO’s Kaiulani de Silva ...

Nathan Bourg (Kaimuki 2000) has graduated from Army basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. ... There’s a big “Mardi Gras Carnaval” in the works for Feb. 24 downtown, and indefatigable Aina Haina resident Mark Tarone is co-producing it with Tim Bostock. Ty Pak, who is helping his wife sell roses for their church at the moment (see page 1), has become a prolific and acclaimed author since retiring from UH-Manoa as an English teacher. Born in Korea, Ty lived through the Japanese liberation, U.S. and Soviet occupation and the trauma of the Korean War, before moving to America and earning multiple degrees. The Hawaii Loa resident also is a distinguished speaker on Korean affairs and literature and has published Guilt Payment, Moonbay and Cry Korea Cry ...

HPR will tape its Aloha Shorts show Feb. 16 in Atherton Studio, honoring Neighbor Island works. Music by Kupa’aina band starts at 6:45 p.m. to warm folks up. Also in the spotlight will be Kapahulu’s Wil Kahele, reading from Manuela Boy by the late Michael McPherson. I wonder if Wil has heard Kupa’aina’s Sunday afternoon practice down the street from him?
