In search of orphans “needing hope and families,” Waialae Nui’s Kristine Altwies Nicholson is on a mission this month with her brother to Addis Ababa, and she’s taking her own 1-year-old daughter, Ava, with her. Kristine directs the non-profit Hawaii International Child, which has been placing children from China, Vietnam and Kazakhstan with local families since 1975. She hopes to set up a humanitarian program between Hawaii and Ethiopia. Attending to her child at hand, meanwhile, means: “I’m taking six times the luggage I usually have, and I’m also bringing her bed for her” ...
