Kaiser High graduate turned winemaker extraordinaire Mikael Sigouin created the 2007 Beckmen Vineyards Estate Grenache that was sipped by guests, famous and infamous, at the White House’s State Dinner Nov. 24. “I am very proud to have made the first wine served for the first president from Hawaii,” Mikael says ... East Oahu artist Kamea Hadar (373-5186) showcases his sculptural paintings in Voluptuous Lines, an exhibit running now through January at Pacific Guardian Center downtown. Kamea also is responsible for the luscious fabric prints at Anne Namba Designs (she’s his auntie), and works for Artflow Studios as head of the glass etching,wood and metal design department ...

East Oahu philanthropist Edith Leong was honored last month as Hawaii’s 2009 Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser. Edith is one of the island’s busiest and most generous volunteers, mentors and donors, sharing her time and money with the Saint Louis School Board of Trustees, the Augustine Educational Foundation, Rehab Hospital and the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, among others. Said Susan Ferandin of the AEF, she “makes me want to work harder, dream bigger and just be the best human being I can possibly be” ... East Oahu artist Susie Anderson has a new exhibit of her small paintings at the Gallery at Ward Centre through Jan. 1. She’s also pleased to report that one of her oil paintings is on the cover of this month’s edition of Park City magazine, which covers the city that hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah ... Congratulations to Hawaii Kai resident and HPU graduate Leilani Marie Oi-Lan Soon, the new Miss Hawaii Chinese Queen. Leilani works at Waikiki Elementary School, and she’ll represent the state at the Miss Chinatown USA pageant in San Francisco in February. She speaks four languages, including American Sign ...

Liholiho Elementary pays tribute to its beloved kumu, Poni Elliot Kamauu, at 1 p.m. Dec. 15 in the courtyard next to the late teacher’s Hawaiian studies room. Special messages from each student will go into a basket for his family. The keiki also will perform songs and dances he taught them
