A Pet’s Best Friend Opens In Kalaeloa

Del.icio.usFurry and feathered friends of all persuasions have new allies in West Oahu, and they will meet this Saturday during an open house and adoption day.
Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will host Open Your Hearts, Open Your Homes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 19 at its Kalaeloa facility, Building 1142 on Roosevelt Avenue. The event will include tours of the facility, food, entertainment and plenty of chances for families to learn more about the nonprofit’s mission.
“The shelter has only been fully operable for about two months, so the open house is more so to raise awareness that there is another option than the Hawaiian Humane Society to serve people on the west side of Oahu,” said Billie Lueder, volunteer with Oahu SPCA. “Unlike the humane society, we don’t take in animals surrendered by owners. It’s really a transitional shelter, meaning they take in rescued animals that have been abandoned or abused.”
Oahu SPCA was formed earlier this year as a means to address the growing population of people and pets on the Leeward area.Located at Barbers Point, the no-kill animal rescue shelter’s overall strategy is to focus on reducing euthanasia of animals by providing free sterilization, expanded fostering networks and humane education.
“When you go on the tour, you’ll actually see all adoptable animals, primarily dogs and cats. There’s a whole adoption process, so if people are interested there will be a tent set up with volunteers ready to walk them through the paperwork,” Lueder said.
“Everything that they’re doing is out of love, so they’re always looking for volunteers to help out at the shelter and also volunteers to foster an animal.
“And if anyone feels like it, they can bring in toys, wet food, kitty litter, collars, those type of items.”
