Aiea Exhibit Showcases Student Art

Del.icio.usMany renowned artists discovered their passion at an early age. Picasso, da Vinci, Degas and van Gogh are just a handful whose fascination began before the age of 15.
Students in grades 7 and 8 from Aiea Intermediate School follow in the footsteps of these greats with a free art exhibit open now through the month of November.
Roy Chang, teacher of the fine arts class, handpicked 40 pieces to be displayed at the Aiea Library (99-143 Moanalua Road) during regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Saturday, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday. (closed Fridays and Sundays).
“Those on display are less than half of the projects turned in,” Chang said. “Each piece is successful in its own right, but I selected pieces to show a range of the individual artistic voices and quality in the products.”
Seventh-graders were assigned the task of re-creating an animal in its natural habitat, while eighth-graders were given two projects: a sculpture expressing the human form and a freestyle form expressing form and function. (Surprise! The sculpture opens for use as a container.)
“As part of assessment and grading, I have students write about their projects and explain what the pieces mean and represent to them,” Chang said.“Some of them really used their art works to express themes such as reaching their dreams, surviving the past, as well as their favorite food.”
He added that his students’ learning levels range from regular to special ed, and they have diverse family backgrounds.
“In a time of ‘No Child Left Behind,’ looking too much at math and language arts test scores,” he said,“being able to display [these works] to the community shows that there other intelligences to look at in students.”
