Bookmobile Runs Out Of Gas, Literally

Del.icio.usHawaii Literacy’s Bookmobile ground to a halt last month, depriving thousands of Waianae Coast children of regular reading programs, homework help and computer learning experiences.
Promoters of Hawaii Literacy’s Classroom on Wheels are appealing to the public to help them purchase a reliable, 21-passenger van - or new engine for the old one - to continue their mission to low-income families “where better literacy is sorely needed.”
Toward that end, cash donations as well as books and educational games are being accepted at the Pearl City and Kapolei locations of Hawaii Self Storage, as well as the company’s Mililani, Salt Lake and Kaimuki sites. HSS already donates 5,000 books annually to public school first-graders.
Until recently, the old Ford E350 visited three transitional housing centers on the Leeward Coast as well as the Nanakuli and Waianae Boys & Girls Clubs, plus seven preschools in Koolauloa on the Windward side. The van’s mechanical problems and major oil leaks finally ended those valuable visits.
“We do hope people will do whatever they can to help us - whether it’s donate $10 or spreading the word via our Facebook cause page,” said program coordinator Megan Naihe.
