Community Fund Seeds West Projects

Del.icio.usConservation efforts and programs throughout the Leeward coast just received a much-needed boost from the Ka Papa O Kakuhihewa Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.
The fund recently awarded $73,000 in grants to the following: Bishop Museum for Magic Planet: Interpreting Climate Change for Leeward students ($8,000); Malama Learning Center at Kapolei High School ($19,000); American Friends Service Committee for Waianae Youth Environmental Justice Institute ($8,000); Hoa ‘Aina O Makaha ($18,000) and Ka’ala Farm Inc. ($20,000).
Ka Papa O Kakuhihewa Fund supports projects that promote natural resource conservation, have a focus on youth, demonstrate a commitment to the local economy and benefit the geographical communities in ZIP codes 96792 and 96707.
The fund was established in 2005 with the financial support of Hawaiian Electric Co., which committed to donate $100,000 each year for 10 years with a portion set aside to ensure program support.
Grant awards generally range between $2,000 and $25,000, and grantees are recommended to HCF by the fund’s advisory committee.
“In today’s economy, these decisions were especially tough to make, but we’re pleased with the quality of the programs selected and the benefit they bring to our Leeward coast community,” said Cynthia Rezentes, advisory committee chairwoman.
