A team of volunteers is hosting a benefit concert “Get HI on Cloud 9” at 6 p.m. Saturday at August Ahrens Elementary School to raise money for a trip to the island of Siargao in the Philippines. While there, team members will work with the Hope For The Island shelter, a Christian nonprofit organization helping improve the lives of impoverished communities in the region.

“We will help transport medical supplies, feed the hungry children and anyone else who needs food,” said team leader Alan Bartolome. “We want Siargao to be self-sustainable, cultivating its own food and help to create jobs for those who want to work.”

The group of good Samaritans, which consists of Bartolome, his wife Donna Mae, John Malmaeeba, Mei Lan Clark and youth pastor Kaipo Thomas, know each other through church ties and functions on Maui and at Bethel Church in Waipahu.

“My wife and I go to the Philippines each year,” said Bartolome, “and when we mentioned that, everyone else thought it would be a great idea to travel and make a positive difference in the lives of those suffering.”

“Get HI on Cloud 9” features a variety of up-and-coming local bands, as well as Define the Word, Pharaohs, Upon Golgotha, Prevail and headliner All Heart. Cost at the door is $7.
