The Leeward Healthy Start is one of only two Healthy Start sites statewide to remain viable and healthy after funding for the program was cut due to the state’s financial crisis.
Healthy Start locations have been reduced from 13 to just the one in Ewa Beach and another in Hilo - areas that are deemed “high risk.”
Child & Family Service operates the Leeward Healthy Start at 91-1841 Fort Weaver Road. The clinic continues to serve environmentally at-risk families with children from newborn to 3 years of age.
Private donations are welcome to help address the current funding gap. Officials say the hope is that the Ewa Beach site will keep the model of the program going so that someday the program may be fully implemented again throughout the state.
Hawaii’s Healthy Start program began as a demonstration child abuse prevention project in July 1985 and expanded its service statewide in 2001 in order to “identify and intervene with eligible environmentally at-risk families, as part of the expanded definition of special needs.”
