Fest Has Trumpeter And All That Jazz

The Pearl City Cultural Center Jazz Festival swings into town at 6 p.m. Saturday at the cultural center, located at the top of Waimano Home Road by Pearl City High School.

Featured performers are the Honolulu Jazz Quartet and Rhythm Summit, a fairly new group composed of taiko drum master Kenny Endo, percussion virtuoso Noel Okimoto and bassist Dean Taba.

Completing the lineup is international trumpet artist and Hawaii native Eric Miyashiro.

Miyashiro is somewhat of a prodigy, beginning his professional music career at the age of 14. He currently lives in Japan, but he has been a showcased artist in jazz festivals across the U.S. as well as in Europe and Japan. He has recorded with music greats including Stevie Wonder and jazz artist Buddy Rich.

Aug. 14 marks Miyashiro’s debut performance as a featured name in Hawaii.

Proceeds from the Jazz Festival go to the Pearl City Cultural Center and to the nonprofit Royal Hawaiian Band music society. Tickets are available at Music Center of Hawaii (located at 851 Pohukaina St., off Ward Avenue) and at Good Guys Music in Kapahulu. Tickets cost $25 general and $20 for students under 18.
