Del.icio.usEighty-one fifth-graders from West Oahu were honored recently by Grace Pacific Corporation as Outstanding Keiki and were treated to an entire day of team building activities at Makakilo’s Camp Timberline, followed by an awards ceremony at Kapolei Middle School.
Selected by their peers with guidance from their teachers, these keiki are outstanding in all aspects of life, exhibiting strong abilities in academics, leadership, citizenship, and civic and community participation.
“The teachers believe those chosen as Outstanding Keiki are among the ‘best and the brightest’ in the area and that they help show the way for others,“said Jay Obrey, vice president of Grace Pacific Corporation. “Through their everyday lives and interaction with other students in school and elsewhere,the Outstanding Keiki show their peers the importance of responsibility and being an active part of the community - be it a fifth-grade classroom or the larger community as a whole.”
The honorees are from Kapolei, Makakilo, Mauka Lani and Barbers Point elementary schools and will be entered into an elite pool of students who, Obrey says, will be eligible for the Grace Pacific-sponsored Outstanding Scholars program upon graduation from high school.
“The award not only helps build confidence in those chosen but affords them the recognition of being leaders in their peer groups,“he explained, adding that the annual Grace Pacific grant funds two $10,000 college scholarships awarded on the basis of citizenship, community service, leadership and academic excellence.
Grace Pacific is a locally owned construction company that founded the Outstanding Keiki program nearly a decade ago to honor and identify the promising youth of tomorrow.
