Jazz Fest Fueling West Scholarships

Del.icio.usGood music for a good cause: That’s the theme behind the Pacific Rim Jazz Festival.
Billed as a showcase of some of the world’s best jazz musicians, the festival plays from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Hokulani Ballroom at Ko Olina’s JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa and will feature the smooth musical stylings of Bobby Caldwell, Rick Braun, Brian Simpson, Pauline Wilson, DeShannon Higa, Patti Austin, Yvett Nii and Grammy-nominated group Hiroshima, just to name a few.
But best of all, proceeds from the evening will benefit the Kapolei Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships and educational initiatives to students from the Kapolei, Waianae and Nanakuli areas who have the motivation, desire and ability to earn a college education but lack the financial support.
This concert-for-a-cause is the creation of headliner Michael Paulo, a renowned saxophonist whose career spans more than 35 years and who currently co-produces the Smooth Jazz Nights series in Waikiki.
Paulo is no stranger to the festival scene - he has produced the Temecula Wine and Music Festival in California for the past six years, and was the musical director/host of the Dolphins Days Music Festival in Hawaii for 15 years. When he was looking for a fresh venue to feature the art of jazz as a way to give back to the community, the West Oahu resort and nonprofit seemed like a perfect match.
“Teaming up with Michael Paulo has been a real blessing,” said foundation chair Sharon Rolirad. “This marriage of venue, entertainment and charity fundraiser has been a win-win for all of us.”
More than 1,300 attendees already are expected, and VIP seating has already sold out. Gold and general admission seats are still available.
