Del.icio.usHalloween candy still may be haunting some refrigerators and cupboards, but Pearl City Highlands Elementary School is ready to talk turkey.
The school - with assistance from the parents’ Kokua Hui and community groups Pearl City Foundation, Pearl City Community Association and Pearl City Lions - is holding a first-time Thanksgiving Imu Fundraiser later this month to help defray shortfalls in this year’s school budget.
“We don’t know what’s coming up as far as the budget is concerned,” said principal Leroy Ching.“My thoughts drift to a number of things: The economy is low, and so are folks’ spirits. But Thanksgiving is that time for families to get together and have something special, and we are hoping to provide this community that outlet.”
Folks are invited to bring their feast of turkey, ham or pork to the school to slow-cook overnight, thanks to the use of a large imu, which volunteers will dig adjacent to the upper elementary playground within the next few weeks. The meat cannot exceed 22 pounds and must be completely thawed and unstuffed before going into the pit. Wrapping methods and further instructions will be given upon ticket purchase.
“We do have some experience with this,” Ching stated with a hearty chuckle.“For our 50th anniversary luau celebration (last year), we had more than 1,000 pounds of pork along with some turkeys, whole hams and lau lau all cooking in the imu. Oh my, so good!”
Cost for kalua space is $20 per item. Tickets are on sale now at the school office. (Only cash will be accepted, and no refunds.)
Drop-off times are between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Nov. 25, with pick-up from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 26. Call 453-6470 for more information.
