Kapolei High School senior Chy Ann Raymond came in third in the 2008 Congressional Art Contest for Hawaii’s Second Congressional District.

Raymond’s entry was entitled Life Cycle, and she said the trees in the photograph represent life and death.

“Trees are like kids as they grow up,” she explained. “The leaves fall apart, and that’s death. When I saw this tree, it struck me.”

Raymond enjoys reading and writing, and she hopes to be a famous photographer in the future. “It takes a lot of practice to be perfect,” she admitted.“Your emotions show in the picture.”

Kapolei High art teacher Amanda Kim had to complete an application process so her students could participate in the competition.

“I’m so happy for her,” said Kim, who has been teaching at Kapolei for four years. “It’ll look good on her resume.”

Winners were honored at a ceremony held in the Maui Community College Library late last month.

The first-place winner was Hilo High School junior Anna Dobos, and second place went to Baldwin High School student Amanda Bowers. In all, the contest drew 134 entries from students on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

“I’m happy that I placed,” said Raymond, whose artwork will be on display at U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono’s Honolulu office for a year. Hirono was on hand at the ceremony to congratulate the winners.

“This is one of the ways we can encourage the creativity in our young people,” Hirono said.

“It’s very important now, as we live in a fast-changing world, and creativity is one of the ways we can learn to be flexible. It’s important that we support the arts.”
