The Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and Chaminade University have joined forces to create a new resource and training facility in Kapolei.

The Kipuka building opened earlier this month within the 24,000-square-foot Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole Community Center and houses a 15-computer station and training center, allowing community members free access to computers for training purposes, job hunting and housing searches.

“This is provided through free Internet access and Internet training as well as printed materials,” said Maile Alau, grants administrator for Hawaii Maoli, a nonprofit founded in 1997 by the AHCC. “We hope this will help people - especially Native Hawaiians and low-income individuals - to find jobs and homes. We’re looking forward to starting our classes in early 2010.”

According to Alau, Kipuka is the first of several “kauhale” structures envisioned in the final center.

“Kapolei Community Development Corporation and Ke Ola Mamo will eventually be part of the ‘kauhale’ to provide well-rounded services,” she stated.

This $1.6 million project was partially funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which provided almost $800,000 in grants and donations from Campbell Foundation, Hawaiian Electric Industries and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

The resource center is open for community access from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Alau also hopes that, with additional staffing in the future, they will be able to extend operations to the center weekends, too.

Kipuka is located at 91-1270 Kinoiki St. near the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ Kalaniana’ole Building.
