LCC Offers Cutting-edge Auto Program

Del.icio.usThose interested in the mechanics of motor vehicles are sure to be all revved up by this: Leeward Community College offers two programs found nowhere else in the state.
In LCC’s Automotive Technology program, requirements set forth by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF) ensure students are equipped with the skills and competencies necessary for success in the ever-changing automotive field.
Graduates gain certification in areas such as transmission and transaxle service, engine performance and repair,suspension and steering, and electrical systems. Successful completion of the appropriate programs and credits earns a Certificate of Completion (CC), Certificate of Achievement (CA) or Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Automotive Technology. The curriculum is one of only two in Hawaii that is accredited by NATEF.
For those with a more ambitious automotive angle, LCC has the unique Ford Automotive Student Service Educational Training (ASSET) program, a reputable statewide program sponsored by LCC, Ford Motor Company and Ford and Lincoln/Mercury dealers.
“ASSET is different from traditional programs because it teaches only the latest technology,“explained program coordinator Jake Darakjian.“Ford Motor Company provides the program with modern diagnostic equipment, new vehicles, current literature, specialty tools and instructor training. Comparatively, the average community college instruction across the U.S. is eight years behind the current vehicles being produced. The dealership places the student with an experienced technician where he or she can perfect their skill in relation to the knowledge gained from the instruction received at the college.”
During this fully sponsored two-year program, students gain paid work-study experience and a head start on competitors in their future profession. Designed for students earning an AAS degree, the ASSET program develops entry-level technicians for the sponsoring dealerships.
“Well over 100 students have graduated from the program since [it began in the fall of] 1991,” Darakjian states.“We have the highest employment rate of all automotive programs is the state. The reason for that is the students have to be employed at a Ford, Lincoln/Mercury, Mazda or Volvo dealership to qualify for the program.”
