New Hours, Signs For Ewa Parks

Four parks to be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. are Asing Community Park, ‘Ewa Mahiko Park, Geiger Community Park and Ewa Beach Community Park. Two parks will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.: Puuloa Neighborhood Park and Ewa Beach Park. The hours for One’ula Beach Park, aka Hau Bush Park, still are pending.
At the May meeting of the Ewa Neighborhood Board, minutes reflect that then-board chair Kurt Fevella said the city’s standard park closure hours are 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and that the time has been set for some time, including at Hau Bush, although it wasn’t enforced.
Ewa Beach resident Coby Lynn believes the park should keep to the hours sanctioned by the city. A former neighborhood board member, Lynn said the park hours have been an ongoing issue.
“Having the park closed will re-engage how law enforcement and neighborhood security watches get more involved,” explained Lynn. “They’ve given up. What happens is the security watch calls to complain about a car with music on too loud and people drinking in the car. The people see the police car, and they put the liquor away and turn down the music. The people in the car dispute the officer’s intentions.
“The signs will make sure folks are aware.” Ewa board vice chairman Tom Berg, who heads its legislative committee, said the signs will let HPD take action - an all-around benefit to residents.
“If you don’t have the sign,“reasoned Berg, “the person complaining by phone has to wait for police to come and identify what was happening and fill out a report. With the sign, when you’re trying to get to sleep at 2 in the morning, you can hang up the phone and get back in bed instead of waiting until the police get there at 4 a.m.”

On the other end of the spectrum, meanwhile, the Ewa Neighborhood Board discussed having all parks closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. because of ongoing drinking and drug transactions there. When that idea came up, some residents disagreed.
“Some people want to play tennis at 9 p.m. - that’s why we put lights in the park,” noted Berg.“In the parks, we have hula and Boy Scouts meeting there.
“Regardless of what hours the park is open, the end result of this discord is that people are paying attention and being good stewards to the park.”
