New Shelter Brings New Hope For ‘09

The new year will bring a new start for many families seeking permanent housing, one example being the 70-unit transitional housing center in Kalaeloa recently opened by Honolulu Community Action Program.
The three-story shelter, now called Kumuhonua, once housed bachelor officers in the military. The land has since been turned over to the state and can now accommodate up to 140 individuals in a secure environment while they look for a place of their own.
“We’re taking in adults over the age of 18 from feeder shelters,” said Val Tavai, HCAP director of community services. “They now have access to housing; we’re offering studio apartments equipped with utilities.”
The West Oahu transitional shelter also will provide program management staff, two case managers and a resident manager to assist clients in obtaining proper life and work readiness skills so that they may be able to secure employment.
“Our goal is to get them on the path of self-sufficiency - to have the skills needed to obtain affordable housing,” Tavai explained. “The programs should help a lot with social interaction.”
At $400 a month, those who are referred from a feeder shelter will be on their way to a new life in a new transitional home. There also are apartments available that are handicap accessible.
