Leeward Community College takes audiences back in time as it presents the world literature classic Journey to the West at 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday.
The show continues at the same time Nov. 20-22 and at 4 p.m. this Sunday at the college theater.
Two principal actors hail from West Oahu - Pearl City’s Spencer Moon is Ba Chieh the pig god, while Sisa Grey, also from Pearl City, pulls double duty as Mrs. Gao/Subodhi. Moon says it is his job to make the audience fall in love with “The Pig.”
“This role is a very physical and high-energy demanding role,“said the aspiring opera singer who has his sights set on attending Juilliard School of Music next year.“I believe my character is the comedic high point in the play.”
Directed by Paul Cravath, the story tells of the iconic Monkey King who escorts a Buddhist monk on a quest to retrieve a holy sutra from India. The show is one of high adventure that promises excitement for all.
And it’s a first of firsts for Cravath, as he is the only one other than Mary Zimmerman, the original playwright herself, to direct a production of this script.
“It has definitely been a journey and has really transformed into one of the most beautiful productions here in Hawaii,“stated Moon, referring to the cast’s 40-plus-hour work weeks since September.
