Still Helping Others After Many Years

Del.icio.usLucy Buonanno was in the first class of Waves, the first group of women to serve in the Navy in 1942. It was her work as a radio operator from 1942 to 1945 that spurred her interest in volunteering for the Battleship Missouri, where she recently was honored with the Truman Centennial Award.
The award goes to an outstanding senior who is 55 years or older. Buonanno has been a volunteer in the human resources and administrative department, helping out with accounting, since 1998.
“I’ve always been active,” said Buonanno, a Salt Lake resident. Besides being in the Navy, she also worked as a secretary to county treasurer and a clerk for a judge in New Jersey.
In fact, helping people is something she does a lot. Her past volunteer work includes being a Girl Scout leader for 10 years, while her present work keeps her busy every Friday at St. Filomena’s Church. She knits Christmas stockings with the Salt Lake Senior Club’s craft group, and they give the stockings to the Kapiolani Women’s and Children’s Center. Buonanno also knits baby blankets that are given to the Navy and Marine Services League for the Navy wives.
Buonanno was honored at the 39th annual Mayor’s Senior Volunteer Recognition event at the Sheraton in 2005, when she was nominated by the U.S.S. Battleship.
When she’s not busy volunteering, Buonanno enjoys going on the computer and reading. The former New Jersey resident who has lived in Hawaii for more than 30 years also helped to baby sit her two grandchildren who are now 25 and 28 years-old.
“Life is incomplete until you can help people,” Buonanno vowed.
