August Ahrens Elementary School took top driving honors at the second annual ABCRI Box Car School Challenge, as its very own Dylan Sugimoto rode his way to victory in a fast-lap tie-breaker challenge against fellow first-place contender Kaishu Tamura of Washington Middle School.

In a nail-biting finish, Sugimoto slipped ahead for a 0.13 second win.

Other August Ahrens top finishers include Jenae Iloreta (third), Kurt Kawamura (fifth), Malia Wilson and Raina Andres (tied for sixth) and Allen Luis (eighth).

The friendly competition at ABCRI Box Car Track between the two schools included 70 fifth- and sixth-grade students. Besides allowing keiki the chance to compete on the Kunia track, the challenge also teaches students good sportsmanship, how to build box cars and also treated participants to pizza donated by Papa John’s.

Stan Mesina and Brenda Kikuyama, August Ahrens tech club advisers and enrichment teachers, got their students involved with box car racing in 2006 when they built three custom cars.

This year the students built six box cars, which involved assembling and painting during the spring semester.

Other Oahu schools are welcome to participate in next year’s competition.

Those interested in the Box Car School Challenge may call BC Cowling at 947-3393. The third annual challenge is scheduled for May 15, 2009.
