The Aiea and Waipahu High School athletic programs soon will be sporting new or improved uniforms and sports equipment on behalf of Adidas.
The two schools were recently recognized as being among the top five point earners for the 2007 Shop and Score program with Times Super Markets and Kraft Foods Hawaii. Nearly 50 Oahu high schools, both public and private, participated in last year’s program. Parents, students, alumni and other community members who purchased Kraft and other designated products using their Times Royal Card at any Times Super Market location on Oahu earned points for the participating school of their choice. As a result, Aiea will get more than $8,000 worth of sports equipment and uniforms, and Waipahu more than $7,500.
“It’s a good program - it definitely benefits the players,” said Aiea athletic director Blake Moritsugu. “Normally our budget doesn’t have the money, so this program really helps us out.”
Waipahu High principal Pat Pedersen added, “It really shows that people support Waipahu and support the ongoing efforts of our athletic program.”
Aiea has participated in the Shop and Score program since it began in 2000, placing second last year, behind Castle. Moritsugu credits this success to the support and efforts within the community.
“The Aiea community made an extra effort to help us out,” he said. “They went out of their way, which is great.
“The players enjoy playing more with new uniforms. Anytime they can get new uniforms, they’re happy. Now the other money in our budget can go toward transportation for preseason games and travel,” Moritsugu explained.
Waipahu placed third last year. “The benefits are tremendous,” said Pedersen, referring to Shop & Score. “We can adequately provide for the needs of our athletes, and we are able to maintain quality uniforms so they can look as good as they perform.”
Also among the top five point earners were Castle, Kalani and McKinley high schools.
“The Shop and Score program is designed so that everyone wins, as each school is guaranteed a minimum of $500 in athletic equipment and uniforms,” Gerald Shintaku, business manager of Kraft Foods Hawaii, said recently. “What’s more, the new equipment and uniforms allow Oahu high schools to stay competitive in their sports.”
An additional $25,000 in scholarships will be awarded courtesy of American Savings Bank to outstanding athletes from Aiea and Waipahu, as well as other participating high schools.
