Below are highlights of what’s coming up in West Oahu.

* ELECTIONS. Deadline is Jan. 16 to apply to be a neighborhood board candidate or to vote in the March 2007 neighborhood board elections. Residents and non-residents over 18 are eligible to vote. Call the Neighborhood Commission at 527-5749.

* DANCING. The Pearlridge chapter of the Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association is registering students Jan. 16 and 23 for rumba, cha cha and paso doble lessons, which will be held from 7 to 9:10 p.m. Tuesdays. Classes are in the Waimalu Elementary School cafeteria. Call 836-4579 or 488-3935.

* COLLEGE. Free college planning workshops, which cover college selection and financial aid, are scheduled at 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at Waipahu High School and 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at Kapolei High School. Each family that attends receives a free workbook. Call 675-0222 (Waipahu) or 692-8200 (Kapolei).

* SCHOOLS The state Board of Education meets at 3:30 p.m. (committee) and 7 (public testimony) Jan. 18 at Kapolei Middle School to hear Leeward concerns. Call 586-3332.

* HIKES. The Hawaiian Trail & Mountain Club leads a 3-mile novice hike at 8 a.m. Jan. 20 on Aiea Ridge. Call 674-1459.

* ONSTAGE. Entertaining at Pearlridge Center this week is Afatia Thompson at 2 p.m. Jan. 20; and Richard Wells at 1 p.m. followed by Halau Hula O Mokulehua at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 at Uptown Center Court. Call 488-0981.

* PARENTS. Keiki Kani Music Studio in Aiea presents a free class to help parents encourage music appreciation and develop musical talent in their children at 3 p.m. Jan. 20 and 27 at 99-016A Kamehameha Hwy. Call 487-2275.

* AGING. Eileen KelleherOrnelles presents “Understanding Advance (end-of-life) Directives” in a Senior Summit series sponsored by Kaiser Permanente at 10 a.m.Jan.24 at its Waipio Clinic conference room. The public is welcome. Call 432-2235.

* BLOOD. The Hawaii Blood Bank conducts donor drives from 8:30 a.m.to 1 p.m.Jan.21 at Waikele Center, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 28 at Ewa Beach Shopping Center, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 29 at Leeward Community College.Call 845-9966.

* BOARDS. Area neighborhood boards meet this month at the following times and dates: Pearl City at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in Highlands Intermediate School cafeteria; Makakilo-KapoleiHonokai Hale at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 in Kapolei High School cafeteria; and Waipahu at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 at Hawaii’s Plantation Village. * BASE YARD. Public comment is due Jan. 22 on the city’s plan to consolidate all of its Leeward operations at one maintenance yard in Campbell Industrial Park. Call John Sakaguchi at 946-2277.

* LEADERS. The Network of Volunteer Leaders holds its general membership meeting at noon Jan. 25 at the Pearl City Urban Garden (via the Home Depot parking lot road).Guest speaker is Gwen Fujie. Call Pauline Kawamata at 955-0100, ext. 18 by Jan. 22.

* OKINAWA.The Hawaii United Okinawa Association seeks host families by Jan. 26 who can be there for visiting teens from Okinawa March 3 to 14. Call 676-5400.

* PLAY. Kapolei Library hosts play mornings for toddlers and preschoolers Thursdays at 10 a.m. through Feb. 1. Call 693-7050.

* DEEJAYS. DJ Azteca from Mexico City and other guest deejays present Latin Night from 9 p.m. every Friday at Panama Hatties in Aiea. Call 485-8226.

* LACROSSE. Lacrosse coaches and referees are needed for boys and girls elementary, intermediate and high school teams in Ewa and Kapolei. Practice begins in the first week of February. Call 548-0451.

* HOST.The Fields Open is looking for hosts (preferably in the Ko Olina area) to accommodate LPGA players and caddies from Feb. 19 to 24. Call 882-4039.
