Below are highlights of what’s coming up in West Oahu.

* RADIO POLITICS Candidates for area City Council Districts I and IX will debate at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 on HPR’s Candidate Debate on KHPR FM; members of West Oahu neighborhood boards talk about the landfill, water use and more with city staff during HPR’s On Politics at 5 p.m. Sept. 30 on KIPO FM.

* NEIGHBORS Pearl City Neighborhood Board meets at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at Highlands Intermediate School cafeteria; the Makakilo-Kapolei-Honokai Hale board meets at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at Kapolei High School cafeteria; and the Waipahu board meets at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at the FilCom Center. Call 768-3710.

* FOOD EXHIBIT Kapolei Library hosts the traveling Smithsonian exhibit, Key Ingredients: America by Food, bringing a variety of displays and free programs. This week’s schedule includes food writer Joan Namkoong speaking on “Key Ingredients to Hawaii’s Cuisine” at 7 p.m. Sept. 23; Hawaii’s Plantation Village docents at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 27; and Culinary historian Wanda Adams at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 on “Why Hawaii Eats the Way It Does.” Exhibit programs run through Oct. 18. * SOCIAL SECURITY Jane Yamanuto-Burigsay of the Social Security Administration discusses the system and its online services in a free workshop at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at Waipahu Library. Call 675-0358.

* TAI CHI Christopher K. Eng demonstrates “Tai Chi for Health” at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 25 at Pearl City Library. The free program is for seniors and other interested adults. Wear comfortable clothes for the interactive 45-minute session. Call 453-6566.

* CRUISE NIGHTS A Cruise Night for car buffs starts at 6 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Kapolei Home Depot parking lot. Call 423-1198.

* WAIAU HIKE The Hawaiian Trail & Mountain Club leads a 12-mile advanced ridge hike in Waiau at 8 a.m. Sept. 27. Go to http://www.htmclub.org.

* CHURCH BAZAAR Waipahu Hongwanji Mission conducts a food and crafts bazaar from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 28 at 94-821 Kuhaulua St.

* BLOOD DRIVE Hawaii Blood Bank conducts a donor drive from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28 by the Ewa Town Center Foodland. Call 845-9966.

* SCHOOL FAIR Holomua Elementary school has its annual Ohana Fair from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 3 at 91-1561 Keanui Drive in Ewa Beach featuring food, games, prizes and entertainment.

* TASTE AT KAPOLEI Kapolei Rotary Club’s annual benefit, “Taste at Kapolei,“runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 4 at Ko Olina Resort. Tickets cost $75 and $35. Call 674-2500.

* BLOOD DRIVE Hawaii Blood Bank conducts a donor drive from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at Pearlridge Uptown. Call 845-9966.

* SENIORS FAIR Pearlridge Uptown hosts its annual Kupuna Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 with information booths, health screenings and volunteer opportunities. Call 488-0981.

* FRIDAY MELE Baba Alimoot and Friends provide free musical entertainment from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Friday throughout Pearlridge. Call 488-0981.

* GARDENING The Urban Garden Center has a free gardening program for the public from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at 955 Kamehameha Hwy. Call 453-6050.

* SENIOR KARATE Shotokan Karate Center conducts karate classes for seniors at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Saturday in the Pearl City Highlands Elementary School cafeteria. Call 456-9407.

* LIVE MUSIC Slack key recording artist Ray Sowders performs live from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday on the lanai of Chili’s Kapolei. Call 693-8722.
