Ewa Weed & Seed’s Culinary Arts Summer Program is growing like, well, a weed, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Haseko Training Fund.

The grant was awarded to help Ewa Weed & Seed run its annual summer culinary program that supports approximately 25 Campbell High School students each year in the six-week course and helps them earn a half-credit toward their high school diplomas.

The program exposes the youths to the the ins and outs of a professional kitchen, culminating in an annual luncheon planned and prepared by the participants, who then present their finished dishes to guests and supporters.

“This annual summer program not only exposes our teens to experiences that foster possible career interests, but provides them with real life skills that they are able to use in their everyday lives,” said Weed & Seed coordinator Gale Braceros.

The 50-hour-plus program was developed through the Weed & Seed site in an effort to reduce truancy and youth-related crimes and keep kids interested in school and graduation. It is taught by Kapiolani Community College chef Grant Sato and Braceros, whose position will be maintained in part by a portion of the grant money as well.

“With this support, we will be able to continue our community efforts to engage our teens in lifelong skill-building opportunities,” Braceros said. “We are very pleased to be able to continue the Culinary Arts Summer Program this year with the support of our strong community partner, the Haseko Training Fund.

Together we will malama our youth for a stronger and healthier Ewa community.”
