West Oahu public schools are now richer for their five newly certified teachers, announced last week by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Among this year’s 44 Hawaii teachers nationally certified are Rosenlee Corey of Campbell High, Sherry Tenn of Waipahu High, Scot Ewen of Ilima Intermediate, Alfred Perez of Kaleiopuu Elementary and Christin Sumida of Aiea Elementary School.

“Every day,” said Hawaii Teacher Standards Board chairwoman Janice Shishido, “these accomplished teachers are having a positive impact on students in Hawaii. The HTSB is honored and grateful to have them working in our classrooms.”

Each candidate undergoes a rigorous series of performance-based assessments that include teaching portfolios, student work samples, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their own classroom teaching. They also submit written exercises of their subject content knowledge.

Some studies have shown higher achievement gains among students taught by certified teachers. Hawaii now has 284 nationally board-certified teachers.
