Guess everything really does happen in threes.

American Renaissance Academy recently celebrated its third year, will present its first graduating class next year and received a three-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in late January.

“Receiving this highly coveted stamp of approval assures ARA’s current and prospective families, faculty and staff and the community at-large of the academy’s enriching and challenging learning environment,” said Rich Schaffer, president of the independent college-prep school in Kalaeloa.

“Not only that,” he added,“but it also tells colleges and universities that we have an accredited program that backs our students’ grades and co-curricular activities without question.”

The three-year accreditation - the maximum term a new school can obtain from the WASC - not only evokes a sense of pride in Schaffer as an administrator, but also as a father.

“My son, Jake, is one of our first graduating students for next year, so this makes me very happy on that level as well,” Schaffer said of the eight-member-strong Class of 2011.

The academy also is in the midst of preparing for its spring musical production of Class In Session, an original show featuring a cast of 40 ARA students and residents from the Leeward side ranging in age from 7 to 18 years old. The production opens April 29 and will run through May 1, with the possibility of a second set of weekend performances to follow.
