Campbell High School senior Ryan Lizardo has been selected as the High School Big Brother of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu.
Kailene Nihipali, BBBSH school-based case manager, said she nominated Lizardo because he went above and beyond the call of duty.
“He has been the leader,” Nihipali said. “Ever since Ryan came on board he does whatever he can to get as many people as he can to be mentors for these kids.”
Lizardo started volunteering with the nonprofit in his sophomore year and has recruited fellow students to serve as mentors for keiki at both Kaimiloa and Holomua elementary schools.
“I would have never expected to win Big Brother of the Year,” Lizardo said.“It is a big honor to be recognized as a role model to children in my community.”
Lizardo has had three “little brothers” during his time with the program. At first, the Littles are shy, he noted, but by the end of the year they don’t want their Bigs to leave.
“You can see how you can make a difference in their lives,“he said, adding that this experience has been a positive influence in his plan to become a teacher.
When not at school or volunteering, Lizardo enjoys watching wrestling and spending time with friends and family.
Faasegi Nansen, a senior at Waianae High School, was named the High School Big Sister of the Year.
