ChalleNGe Academy Earns Award From FBI

Del.icio.usThe Kapolei-based Hawaii Youth ChalleNGe Academy recently received the 2010 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for its dedication to getting high school dropouts back on track.
The academy is the local chapter of the National Guard Youth Challenge Program and works with an average of 400 teenager each a year through two 22-week-long sessions.
As part of the program’s intervention model, cadets learn eight core components - academic excellence, life-coping skills, job skills, health and hygiene, responsible citizenship, community service, leadership/followership, and physical fitness - that focus on the holistic development of the student and encourage lifelong success.
Since it began in 1994, the academy has graduated more than 2,578 cadets, of which more than 2,200 have earned their high school diplomas.
Every year each of the FBI’s 56 field offices nominates one chapter for the award.
