Construction Begins On Roads, Park, Rail In ‘10

Mahalo to all who turned out to support Kapolei City Lights in December. The event continues to get bigger and better every year, and I’d like to thank some unsung heroes who dedicate their time and creativity to make the festivities possible. Special thanks to Patty Teruya and Joy Wilson for their efforts to ensure that the Leeward community continues to feel the true spirit of Christmas. The entire Kapolei ohana worked tirelessly in order for everything to run smoothly with the parade, block party and displays at Kapolei Hale.
Now we look forward to an exciting year ahead. My administration holds true to the broad policies we established five years ago: public safety, fiscal accountability, sewers and solid waste, transportation and public facilities.
We have programmed $150 million for road repaving over the next year or so, adding to the funds we’ve already spent on projects across the island. We’re continuing to invest heavily in repairing and upgrading our sewer system and wastewater treatment plants.
Our parks and public facilities look more vibrant than ever. Our financial reporting has received awards, and we earned clean marks on audits - not to mention receiving strong bond ratings as a result of our fiscal policies.
Public safety is a major priority, as we replace fire engines and police vehicles, repair firehouses and take other steps to ensure our first responders retain their national accreditations and meet the safety and security needs of residents and visitors.

We remain on track to build a rail transit system that will serve the people of Oahu for generations to come.
Year 2010 begins with milestones, including the Jan. 11 groundbreaking of Ewa Mahiko District Park at the former Ewa Sugar Mill site on Renton Road. The $8.3 million project will provide much-needed recreational facilities and should be completed in late 2011.
Construction includes a 10,440-square-foot gym, multipurpose building, two basketball courts, four tennis courts, two volleyball courts, lighting for all courts, accessible walkways, a 235-stall parking lot with lighting, and irrigation. Yamasato Fujiwara Higa and Associates is design consultant, and 57 Builders Ltd. won the construction contract.
