Last month, the Pearl City and Beta chapters of the Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association washed the screens and louvers at Manana Elementary School as part of the groups’ mission of giving back to the community.
“We have done it for several years and hope to continue it annually,” said Shirley Ota, HBDA council vice president.
About 25 members came out to help with the service project, which Ota said was as “successful as it has been in previous years.”
Starting next month, 19 members of the dance chapters will tutor students at Manana every weekday for about an hour. The tutoring sessions focus on reading; however, the group does try to accommodate other specific needs requested by teachers.
“In October, we do a community general cleanup and in April we help out with the craft fair,” added Ota.
HBDA’s Pearl City chapter conducts classes in American social ballroom dance from 7 to 9:10 p.m. every Tuesday at the school. Classes run for eight weeks each quarter and usually start on the first week of January, April, July and October.
The Beta chapter teaches International style from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays.
HBDA membership and class fees are required. For more information, call Ota at 456-2129.
