Leeward Community College Theatre welcomes Black Grace Dance Company to its stage at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Black Grace, which is slang in New Zealand for “daring and bravery,” embody qualities that have catapulted this all-male dance group to the forefront of contemporary dance.
As New Zealand’s leading contemporary dance company, Black Grace fuses Pacific and contemporary dance in an extraordinary and dynamic form. It is internationally renowned for its artistry, creative excellence and innovation.
Founder and choreographer Neil Ieremia draws from Samoan and New Zealand history and culture as well as his own life experiences in creating his work. In fact, the piece Surface was inspired by Ieremia’s father who, at the age of 64, decided to undergo the often painful process of having the pe’a (a traditional Samoan body tattoo) inscribed on his skin.
Surface is one segment of Black Grace’s three-part program, which brings a selection of their best repertoire from its 15-year existence. Other pieces are Minoi, a signature work based on the fusion of Samoan and Western contemporary dance styles, and excerpts from Gathering Clouds, Ieremia’s latest full-length work.
General admission is $30; $26 for students, senior citizens and military; $20 children age 12 and under. For tickets, call 455-0385 or visit www.lcctheatre.hawaii.edu.
Black Grace also will conduct a free Dance Master Class at 2 p.m. Friday in the Leeward Theatre Dance Studios. To reserve a spot, call 455-0385.
