For some, the scenes from the attack on Pearl Harbor more than 68 years ago can only be imagined in the wildest of nightmares. To others, it seems like only yesterday.
In honor of those who survived the attacks and continue to serve, the Kailua Elks Lodge hosts an appreciation dinner for Pearl Harbor Survivors Association volunteers at 5:30 p.m. this Saturday at Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club (44-503 Kaneohe Bay Drive).
Pearl Harbor survivors Sterling Cale, Everett Hyland, Robert Kinzler, Harold O’Connor, Alfred Rodrigues and Herbert Weatherwax will be honored for their dedication when they were young men serving our country and today as they continue as volunteers at the Arizona Memorial Museum, meeting and greeting thousands of visitors each day and sharing stories of the “day that will live in infamy.”
“They (the survivors) are all so excited,” said Colette Aoki, co-chair and secretary for the Kailua Elks Lodge. “Basically, we’ll have a brief introduction of the men who are attending, and we’ll also be giving them time to say a few words if they want to. They’re mostly in their 80s and 90s, so it’s really up to them if they want to share.”
Special invited guests include Gov. Linda Lingle, Parks and Recreation director Lester Chang, Sen. Daniel Inouye, commander of Pearl Harbor Shipyard Capt. Greg Thomas and USS Arizona Memorial historian Daniel Martinez. USO music by the Paradise Sisters, a dinner and dancing will commemorate the event, and a special gift will be presented to each of the honorees.
Donations for the evening are welcomed. Call Aoki at 284-6593.
