Who says going from high school to college athletics is such a big deal?
OK, most people do. But most athletes aren’t Joslyn Eugenio of Kapolei.
The Saint Martin’s freshman pitcher and first baseman has done more than hold her own against more-experienced softball players - she has dominated. The Sacred Hearts grad had the third-best batting average (.392) in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference while leading the conference in doubles (20). She also posted an 8-13 record with a 3.65 era for the Saints and was a unanimous selection for Freshman of the Year, an honor she wasn’t expecting.
“I was surprised. I really didn’t know my stats throughout the season until my coach told me,” said the business administration major. “My main focus was to try my best, and it just
happened that I did so well. I didn’t pay attention to my statistics so it was a shocker to make the team.”
More impressive than her success on the field was her success in the classroom. Eugenio made the dean’s list each semester and has earned a 3.75 grade-point average in her first year on campus. But while it may seem that things just come easy for the easy-going student-athlete, she quickly points out that looks can be deceiving.
“Adjusting to the college life was hard,” she admitted, “and so was getting the opportunity to be in the classroom, playing softball and traveling so much. It was definitely an adjustment I had to make.”
Fortunately she had a friend to help her along. One of Eugenio’s teammates is fellow freshman and Mililani native Jaimee Aiwohi.
“Our teammates call us the Hawaiian Punch,” laughed Eugenio.
The talented sophomore-to-be is back in Hawaii enjoying time with her family but acknowledges next year will be tougher as the opponents have a better understanding of what she and her teammates like to do. So she’s not just sitting idly by waiting for the season.
“I just have to work extra hard throughout the off season and try to keep up my stats and get stronger.”
Which could mean bad news for future opponents.
