Feb. 5 Is Last Day For Grants

The Hawaii Community Foundation is now accepting proposals for its 2010 Ka Papa O Kakuhihewa Fund.

Any nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, school, unit of government or neighborhood group is eligible to apply for the grant as long as the program/project promotes resource conservation to benefit communities on the Leeward coast. (To apply for a grant of more than $5,000, groups must be a tax-exempt or have a fiscal sponsor.)

Proposals must be postmarked by Feb. 5 and mailed to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Oahu office: 1164 Bishop St., Suite 800, Honolulu, HI, 96813, marked Attention: Ka Papa O Kakuhihewa Fund. Decisions for the grants will be made in March.

The Ka Papa O Kakuhihewa Fund was established as a component fund of HCF by the Ka Papa O Kakuhihewa Council in 2005 (with funds provided by Hawaiian Electric Company) to promote resource conservation programs that affect the use of natural resources in the Kapolei-to-Waianae region.


In 2009, a total of $73,000 in grants was awarded. Organizations and their projects include Bishop Museum, Magic Planet classroom project; Malama Learning Center, to promote environmental education in the Kapolei community; KAHEA: The Hawaiian Environmental Alliance, for the Pono Energy Planning Project; Ka’ala Farm Inc., for its Work ‘n Learn Program; American Friends Service committee, Waianae Youth Environmental Justice Institute; and Hoa ‘Aina O Makaha’s Hooulu Ka ‘Aina.
