Fest Celebrates Mother Earth

To mark the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day, Leeward Community College will present Ka Mole o Na Pua Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the campus courtyards.

Celebrating sustainability through word, music and interactive activities, the free family event will have nonstop entertainment, local-style storytelling, arts and crafts activities,“Going Green"information and organic food, produce and product booths. Entertainers include Brother Noland, Sista Robi Kahakalau and Jeff Rasmussen, Tony Conjugacion, Mailani, Hiikua, Roy Sakuma and Hawaiian mele and hula.

Ka Mole o Na Pua is the culmination of Earth Week activities at the college. Ka Mole (“main root of a plant”) illustrates the relationship between kupuna and keiki - as the main root nurtures the plant, the intent of the festival is to educate and engage young people in the care of our environment. To that end, hands-on and reading activities will be linked to LCC students who are studying to become teachers.

As festival chairwoman Bobbie Martel noted, “Malama i ka aina, taking care of the land, ensures that she will take care of us. Sustainability is critically important for us as individuals and communities. We hope the festival offers a legacy to our keiki and future generations to do the same.”
