The newly renovated Barbers Point Bowling Center is now open daily for both military and civilian use.
“Word is getting out and it’s picking up, and it keeps growing every day,” said co-owner Linda Painter, who worked tirelessly to restore the once privately run bowling center with Bev Brennan after it closed in 2008. (The pair ran the business on a temporary basis after the monthlong closure.)
After signing a formal lease agreement with Ford Island Ventures, which obtained the facility from the Navy, the Makakilo residents officially reopened the lanes March 8.
“We’ve noticed a big influx of the civilian community,” Painter said.“The civilians in the area are very excited because there aren’t many (public bowling alleys) left.”
Hours are 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and it’s open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
“We have leagues on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, and also Monday and Tuesday nights. And we hosted a few tournaments,” said Painter, who conducted the junior bowling program when the facility was under previous ownership.

“The biggest difference in the look of the place is everything is just clean. We repaired the machines and have it all maintained.”
The new-and-improved center also is home to the Prop Stop Restaurant, with a variety of plate lunches and daily specials.
“The shoyu chicken is excellent,” added Painter. “And we have baked spaghetti and steak and shrimp once in a while. And we have breakfast all day long, so that’s very popular.”
For good food or a friendly game of pin knocking, Barbers Point Bowling is the place to go. It’s located in Building 1831 on Saratoga Avenue.
