A friendly partnership between farmer and consumer is the idea behind the recently launched CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program at Waianae’s MA’O Organic Farms.
Subscribers pledge to support MA’O's farm operations and youth leadership development. In return, they receive a weekly box of produce organically grown by MA’O's youth interns.
Each eight- to 12-pound box of seasonal produce grown at the farm in Lualualei Valley generally includes MA’O's signature salad mix, a selection of cooking greens, roots and herbs. Other seasonal items can include organic vegetables and fruits such as tat soi, bak choy, basil, rainbow chard, daikon, radish, Italian and Japanese eggplant, mangoes, lemons and beets.
A minimum eight-week subscription costs $256 plus tax, with price discounts for long-term dedication. There also is a one-time box fee for a reusable plastic box that the produce arrives in.Subscribers are required to return used boxes each week in exchange for their filled box.
Boxes are delivered by 4 p.m.every Monday at Leeward Community College-Waianae, 86-088 Farrington Hwy. #201. Boxes must be claimed before 8 p.m.
